Game 3: at Washington
With time at a premium, it really disappoints me that I didn't have time to blog this one before it happened. Games like this are why this blog exists. This was a win. Guaranteed. There were absolutely no pitfalls possible on this road trip to PAC 10 country.
That's what I heard, anyway.
This is a game that everyone in the Valley was sure the Dogs would win while I was almost certain they would lose. And lose they did
The Fresno State team went to Washington a couple of years ago and beat a Huskie team that was among the worst in Division 1 college football. Of course, it was spun as a huge win over a BCS opponent.
For some reason, the folks who wear red from head to toe were under the impression that Ty Willingham was going to send the same guys out on the field this year to play Fresno State. That turned out to be highly misguided as Washington won this encounter by a score of 21-20.
Once again, FSU's special teams played the goat as the margin of defeat was the blocked extra point attempt after the Bulldogs' final touchdown drive. Prior to this year the special teams unit was an elite outfit that accounted for an insane number of blocked kicks against the opponent. This year's unit is making mental mistakes and getting its own kicks blocked.
No sooner had the Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 on the season then those amazing, whiny voices of rationalization started trumping up the fact that the team is still 1-0 in the WAC and that the non-conference losses don't mean anything. And there is the multiple personality of the Fresno State football fan base. It's all about crashing the BCS party until the losses start piling up, as the inevitably do. Now, the not-so-important WAC race is the most important thing in the world. I wonder what happens when WAC loss number two shows up a few weeks from now.
Next Up: vs. Colorado State
